Applications

echome has been used in a variety of different settings and for different purposes. The case studies below give a sense of the range of user groups and contexts in which the use of echome has been explored, outline the aims of each engagement and offer reflections on the relationship between the specific needs and preferences that were operative in each setting and the way the system was developed and adapted.

Dance Training

Ability Northern Ballet

Hunting Honey-Bee was a six-week project (2021) exploring the use of echome as a tool for dance training and performance.

Healthy Ageing

ART-thritis

ART-thritis was a five-week pilot project (2022) exploring the use of echome as a form of creative expression for communicating experiences of living with arthritis and chronic pain.

A Brand New Sense

A Brand New Sense was an ESRC Healthy Ageing Catalyst Award delivered between 2023 and 2024 with Dr Antonis Stavropoulos-Kalinoglou, Prof Nikos Stavropoulos, Kingsley Ash and Rosemary Spencer in partnership with care homes, charities and Leeds City Council.

Workshops

Sonic blankets

Sonic Blankets was a workshop designed and run with artist Sunny Vowles in 2021 at Dai Hall in Huddersfield. The workshop combined activities in deep listening with an exploration of the system as a tool for composition.

Listening-Drawing

Listening Drawing was a workshop for the general public commissioned by Leeds Central Library as part of Make Music Day on the 21st of June 2023. The workshop was inspired by Kandinsky’s work, especially his understanding of sound and the role that sound and music played in his paintings.
