How it works

echome consists of a custom-made software and off-the-shelf hardware assembled in a secure and highly intuitive device. The hardware consists of two components:  one or more inertia measurement sensors that pick up the motion data and a device that runs the software.

echome is currently working with Arduino Bluetooth microcontrollers that measure acceleration in 3 axes and/or an iPhone device fitted with a gyroscope application. A custom-made case (550mmx550mm) encompasses the microcontroller, a rechargeable battery and a set of operation buttons (for changing the sound). This makes the use of the sensor safe, simple, lightweight and environmentally friendly. A harness attached to the case can tie the sensor to any body part.

The software is custom made on Max/MSP and can run from a laptop (Mac or PC) or an echome box. Both the laptop-based system and the box-based system require very minimal set up and can be operated without any specialist technical knowledge.
