Composition

There are two primary pathways in which composition (towards the creation of activities, material for performance, or structures for improvisation) with echome can be organised:

One involves the set of relationships between movement, sound, body, space and potentially object that  can be organised into a score or open structure. This is a form of composition that is communicated through instructions and happens in the space. It is based in a process of trial and error and seeks to combine sounds and movements which share morphological characteristics  and can therefore sustain the exploration of both and/or enable the emergence of a new set of meanings. One of the most obvious examples is to combine a pitch based sound with the rolling of the spine. As the spine articulates through the joints of each vertebra, the sound hits a different note. Progression along a scale constitutes in this case a shared morphological structure which makes sense both in terms of the sound and the movement, enhancing the perception of both. This can potentially create a hybrid, trans-sensorial, kinesonic experience, whereby sound and movement can be both sensorially distinguished and perceptually bound together. Further examples of similar structures can be found in the Kinesonic Embodiment set of videos.

The other opportunity for composition is the one  that takes place within the echome interface. The software interface includes the functionality to input any kind of recorded sound, by adding an audio file in the main folder with the sounds that are available to the user. This includes the possibility of combining up to 3 different audio files within the same sound sample. This provides an accessible way for non experts to play with the sound as well as with the creation of composite soundscapes.
